Training Opportunities
The Commission on Child Protection will be working with the Center for Children's Advocacy, Lawyers for Children America, the NACC, NITA, the Judicial Branch, the CBA and others to provide training opportunities for lawyers practicing in the field of Child Protection. New contract attorneys will be required to attend Pre-Service Training presented by the Center for Children's Advocacy and all contract attorneys will be expected to attend In-Service Training as set forth in their contract. These requirements may increase commensurate with any compensation increases secured by the Commission on Child Protection.
Center for Children's Advocacy: The Commission on Child Protection has established a contract with the CCA to provide pre-service trainings for new juvenile contract attorneys and ongoing in-service training for all contract attorneys. New 2009 Juvenile Attorney 3 day mandatory training will take place August 25, 27 and October 2, 2009. For other upcoming CCA trainings please check CCA's website http://www.kidscounsel.org/
Upcoming DCF Training 2009 Schedule - DCF Cross-Training: The Commission on Child Protection has teamed up with DCF to have their Training Academy provide courses in subject areas pertinent to the well-informed practice of Child Protection Law. As soon as DCF provides the Commission with an update of its course offerings it will be posted on the website.
Lawyers for Children America: Attorneys who wish to attend additional "core" training and the Bi-Annual Seminars on special topics offered by LCA may do so at no cost. For upcoming trainings please visit our website calendar or you may contact L.C.A. directly.
The National Institute of Trial Advocates will conduct a 3 day Child Advocacy Trial Skills Training from June 18th to June 20th, 2009. Due to the training coinciding with the judges institute and suspension of court business, 42 CCPA juvenile contract attorneys will receive a scholarship through funding from the Court Improvement Grant to attend.
ABA Center on Children and the Law The National Project to Improve Representation for Parents Involved in the Child Welfare System hosted its first ever National Parents’ Attorneys Conference, on May 13th and 14th in Washington, D.C. The conference began with plenary speakers calling for attendees to take back the mantle of what it means to be a child advocate and to form a political movement to contest a national practice that exalts permanently severing parent/child ties and results in the overrepresentation of poor children and children of color in the foster care system. The conference materials are available at the link below. We have also included a link to conference materials relevant to parent representation from the National Conference on Children and the Law.
CBA-CLE's: The CCPA will continue to consider, with pre-approval, reimbursing juvenile contract attorneys for attendance at appellate advocacy, brief writing, professional ethics and other CBA continuing legal education programs within existing appropriations.
